#327 | New squat in Athens

A new squat has opened in Athens, in the working-class neighbourhood of Aigaleo, and is having two days of events (today and tomorrow) to celebrate.

The poster below translates:

In these hard times, with authorities attacking more than ever before our everyday reality…

we occupied

the ground floor of the municipal space of Kapodistriou and Thessalonikis Str at the Council Housing buildings of Aigaleo. We consider the occupation an open suggestion that starts from its own grounds and claims all the space and time of our everyday lives that is stolen from us by authority; it attacks anything that limits the needs and the desires of the exploited and the repressed of this world.

#325 | Text by the workers of the self-organised restaurant “barthelonika”

As reported, the workers of the restaurant “barthelonika” in Thessaloniki, Greece have decided to take the restaurant under their own control in order to prevent its closure. What follows is a translation of a text issued by the workers themselves (greek original here) explaining their action and calling for solidarity.

AGAINST THE CLOSURE OF THE RESTAURANT BARTHELONIKA

LETS SUPPORT THE SELF-MANAGEMENT OF THE RESTAURANT BY ITS WORKERS

Since Monday the 7th of June us, the workers at the restaurant Barthelonika run the restaurant ourselves and for this reason, ask for the help and the support of all the workers of Thessaloniki.

Two weeks ago the owners of the restaurant announced us that the establishment was not going well and that it would close down for the three summer months – and further, that it was uncertain wether it would reopen in September and how many of us would work – and under what working conditions. They also announced us that all the workers at the restaurant would be fired immediately while firing compensations would only start to be paid out in October… that is, of course, if they had any money to pay the compensations out.

As workers in the food industry we know well that a firing in today’s circumstances of deep economic crisis and tough anti-workerist attacks would mean our throwing out in the cold. For this reason we decided as workers at the restaurant not to bow our heads and to take matters in our own hands. We demanded and achieved from the management of the restaurant to pay some expenses for the establishment and our own insurance – and we now have taken on the management of the restaurant for the following two months (June and July) while in August we have achieved to have our holiday as normal.

As workers at the Barthelonika restaurant we are determined not to allow the restaurant where we work to close but also, not to allow any restaurant to close and no co-worker to bef ired. For this reason we stand in solidarity with the just struggle of our co-workers at the Banquet restaurant.

The restaurant Barthelonika will be under our control, through our general assembly. Decisions concerning its running will be taken by majority and will be respected by all us co-workers. Whatever remains from profit after expenses will be distributed equally among all co-workers. All of us co-workers will work the same hours, at the same positions where we were before.

We have also decided to offer a 30% reduction to all customers of the restaurant.

We call for all workers, the youth and the people of Thessaloniki to actively support our effort to run the restaurant, in order to save our jobs and not to be thrown out to unemployment and misery.

The restaurant Barthelonika is in the centre of our city, at 3 Venizelou Str in the Rogoti Arcade, 1st floor, tel. 2310 225 242

Opening hours: 11 am to 1 am. Closed on Sundays.

#324 | Workers occupy the building of the National Radio and Television (ERT) in Athens

(Update, 15.50 local time)

The workers, who’s larour agreement ends today and the state has announced that they will not renew them, have occupied since this morning the building of the National Radio and Television (ERT) in Agia Paraskevi, Athens. All programs have been cancelled and the permanent staff is not allowed to enter the building. We are talking about 1047 workers that will be unemployed from tomorrow, if nothing changes.

The administration initially told the occupiers that they support the struggle of the workers, and agreed with a syndicalist, to end the occupation, with the promise that they will publish an announcement in support and will try to rehire some of them with the legal procedures. When the syndicalist told the rest of the workers this decision, they diasagreed and the occupation continues. An assembly is taking place at this time, while the administration gave an ultimatum to the occupiers to end the occupation by 16.00 local time (GMT+2).

#323 | Thessaloniki, Greece: the first self-organised restaurant has arrived

From June 7th, the restaurant barthelonika in the centre of Thessaloniki is working in a self-organised manner, run by its workers. It all began when the owner of the restaurant announced to the workers that the restaurant will close for three months during summer and that he will decide its fate in September. The workers, from their part, claim the business is making profit and there is no reason for it to suspend its operation.

And so, they made an informal agreement according to which the workers themselves will take on the running of the restaurant for two months, in order for them not to become unemployed.

Now, as they tell us, the restaurant barthelonika is “working normally without bosses, managers and hierarchical relationships. We all decide together about everything, we find suppliers and look after the place. In this climate of crisis, if we accept the decisions of the bosses without reaction we will be lead straight to abjection”, they stress out.

Immediately after taking on the management of the restaurant, the workers applied a 30% reduction on all dishes and have invited the society of Thessaloniki to support this self-organised project. On Sunday the kitchen of barthelonika is transferred to the Anti-racist Festival, where the workers decided to attend and cook for its visitors.

#322 | General strike day in Athens: demonstrators attack police with their bare hands; fascists rooted off the demo; super-market looted; riot police beat demonstrators in the metro; money transfer vans chasen out of Exarcheia

A brief summary of a very eventful day…

  • At least 13 detentions in the Athens demonstration alone, six of which have turned into arrests (that is, these people face charges). There are already e-mails circulating, denouncing the unprovoked arrest of Dimitris Aggelis Dimakis, a student of European History at the University of Athens. Any updates on Dimitris’ case, or any other of today’s arrestees, will be published here.
  • The general strike demonstration largely lacked in numbers (anything between 30,000 and 50,000 might be a good estimate, that together with the demo of the stalinist PAME, which is always separate). The reasons could be anything from the numbness so many feel from the cataclysmic changes happening all around us, to the May 5th aftermath, or simply that we’re entering deep summer. In any case, what we lacked in numbers we had in the passion of some people who were out on the streets. When a couple of riot police units tried to cross through part of the demonstration at Syntagma (just opposite parliament) they were evidently surprised to see the amount of abuse they got from “ordinary” demonstrators who attacked them with empty water bottles and their bare hands, to send them out of the demonstration. More photos from this incident here.

  • Earlier on, at exactly the same spot (Syntagma square, opposite the Grande Bretagne hotel) around 25-30 fascists hadgathered with greek flags, banners, army clothing and so on. They were attacked by a few comrades who were immediately joined in by other demonstrators. The fascists were attacked with their own flag poles. They were chased all the way to the other end of Syntagma square, where they  found refuge behind a riot police unit. This is the second attempt by small fascist groups to join in a general strike demonstration (the first being May 20th) but they must be learning a lesson by now. Some more photos from today’s demonstration in Athens are here.
  • Before the demonstration, about 25 comrades stormed in the supermarket Sklavenitis in the neighbourhood of Pagrati and removed essential goods which they then re-distributed at a nearby open air market, along with a text explaining their action. A similar action took place in Thessaloniki, too.
  • After the demonstration, two money transfer vans driving through Exarcheia were chasen and smashed up at Stournari Street (close to the Polytechnic school).
  • Finally, after the demonstration in Athens, riot police units stormed the metro and chased people who were leaving the people. They were attacking, beating and pushing people at the platforms with imminent danger for the demonstrators’ lives. More photos from the Omonoia station incident here.

  • Meanwhile, overground, riot police were also beating demonstrations – again at Omonoia:

  • Earlier, at Syntagma square again, the thugs of the “Delta” motorcycle police force were only too eager to confirm the old Greek saying, “stupidity is unbeatable”. Two of their motorcycles collided with one another. The result?

This sums up the main incidents from Athens today. The mainstream trade union, GSEE, has already announced there will be another strike next week – the date is yet to be confirmed and will appear here as soon as it is known.
