#350 | “In the name of class dignity, fellow passengers are requested…”

A sticker circulating around public  transportation (metro, buses) in Athens:

“Passengers are requested, in the name of elementary class dignity, should they have validated their ticket, to hand it over to passengers without a ticket, once they have completed their journey. In this way, possible quarrels will be avoided with those sad leeches, the ticket inspectors”

Signed, the “Conspiracy of the Equal”

A little bit of background: tickets in Athens’ public transportation are valid for 1,5 hour once validated and so, a huge impromptu movement has started with people passing on tickets to fellow passengers once they’ve completed their journey. This has prompted OASA, the transport authority, to issue “legal warnings” in the format of the sticker above, on the back side of tickets, warning that this action is illegal. And so, the sticker above has come as a response…

Excellent! Auto-reduction in action! This used to happen in the UK , in the Eighties, in a totally informal way, with all-day travelcards, until the bastards introduced digital ticketing…

We need this in NYC. Something like “In the name of class dignity, use your unlimited Metrocard to swipe someone into the Subway on your way out. Fuck the system”

This was an integral part of the San Francisco MUNI Fare/Social Strike in 2005. In addition to not paying, riders were encouraged to hand over their still-valid tickets to those waiting at the stop to encourage non-payment. While it was not introduced by the strike, it is still a common event.

stealing from the Community! Terrible thing to do! Communal services must be paid for and short-cutting them will have us all back in cars and private taxis – a push in the wrong direction!
Rewards for tattle-tales must be instituted! It is part of the communist, collective manifesto! We ALL pay a little for a greater collective return, but if some smart-ass capitalist thieving pricks don’t pay, the whole collective gain is placed in jeopardy!
Unite against the shit-heads who would threaten the collective benefit for all! Make them pay! communal transport is not charity! It is a collective agreement that if each of us pay a small fee we can share in the greater collective benefit of low cost transport – cheaters in this collective bargain should be held accountable!

The alternative to public transport for most people is not cars or taxis. We don’t have money for that. The alternative is not being able to go anywhere.
Public transport should be payed for by taxes or even better by taxing companies whos employees need to use public transport to go to their workplaces.
