On Wednesday, the PASOK government issued an emergency order against the strike of the lorry drivers. The order (in greek: politiki epistrateusi, i.e. civil conscription) in theory means that every striking lorry driver will receive a personal letter calling them back to work; disobeying this could result in imprisonment. Also, the political conscription allows the army to intervene and to replace the striking drivers in their duties. This, in turn, means that the army could step in to distribute petrol to gas stations, which have all but completely dried up by today, the fourth day of the strike.
Earlier this morning, a group of striking lorry drivers clashed with the police outside the ministry of Transport in Athens (pic). At this time (14.54 GMT+2) a committee of the strikers is in emergency negotiations with the ministry
Updates will appear here as they come.

What are they striking for, dont these lorry drivers understand that their country is bankrupt?
Werewolf, i will not answer to your provocative question. The drivers are striking, because the government wan’t to ‘open’ the ‘closed ‘. This means, in two words, that insteed of being bosses of their selves, they will be employees of large firms. Of course the issue is much more complex, and the government is intending to change the working conditions of almost all sectors.
werewolf, of course, how irresponsible of them! It was *their* fault the country has gone bankrupt, why won’t they just take in the consequences now? Same as the journalists, the ship-owners, the bankers do… We’re all in this together!
I’m sorry but i just dont get it. What do they want? Isnt it a little bit late for them to be demanding responsible economic policy? I mean its same as if one is running to toilet when you already have shit in your pants?
Idiots… go get a job and pay some taxes lazy assholes. And next time vote for a government that works. Now it’s too late and you are crying like babies. If you want to achieve something work harder. Being lazy is not a career
Carl = Troll. What agency do you work for? Are are you just a racist against Greeks?
According to EU statistics Greeks are the hardest working in Europe (some work more than 1 job). There is a black market in Greece that employs over 300,000 people and not to mention the fact that Greeks boast the lowest wages in Europe yet the local corporate elite/ oligarchy can’t take advantage of that because they are too busy sucking the fat off big government contracts and stealing people’s money. So, why should Greeks pay taxes if their money will be stolen and not used towards the needs of the people. Why do you think they are so pissed off in the first place?
There is no social contract between Greek working class and the elite. There never has been.
Also, Greece has the strongest small business growth among all 22 industrialized economies (US is last), the IMF/EU sanctioned cuts will gut Greece and turn them into debt peons.
Screw that. I say fight to kick the IMF out of the country and work towards and international movement of solidarity against all austerity measures.
SHPURT is a stupid asshole fucking lazy Greek. You lazy morons, IMF would NOT have involved with your country if you have voted for a government that works. Now you have to pay the price. It is stupid to want us the rest to pay your messes.
The IMF is there to bail out the ruling class which has destroyed the economy with their financial parasitism and corruption (historically Greek political parties are facilitators in this). So now, they are asking workers to bail them out. This is a travesty. It’s nothing to do with laziness.
I like Carl if ever lackey of the ruling class is as stupid as him even the worst led revolution in history may prove successful. And just a little bourgeois economic history here. The industrial revolution in England reduced the earnings of thousands who spun and wove cloth as independent artisans. They tried to compensate by working longer hours. But its not longer hours that count but more productive hours. It is possible to work less hours and less intensively and still produce more. Its a question of technique and science not 19th century moral categories. Still I don’t doubt the dim witted Carl thinks the value of paper money an intrinsic property. He’s the sort of person who if he survived a nuclear war would as his first act rob a bank.
