Tabloid journalist Sokratis Giolias was assassinated outside his house in the suburb of Ilioupoli, Athens at approximately 05.25 local time on Monday morning. According to media reports Giolias was shot by three men who fired at least sixteen times. Giolias was allegedly a main contributor to “troktiko” (rodent), a popular news blog with ties to the police and far-right groups.
According to the police, Giolias was shot with weapons that have been previously used by the group “Revolutionary Sect” – and so this group is so far treated as the main suspect for the attack.

Right, newsflash for you, mr. Brabandt: Giolias was not an “investigative journalist”. In fact, he was not even a journalist (he was not part of the Athens journalists’ union, he did not have a press pass). But regardless of this, his blog, troktiko, was and remains a well-known website feeding info straight from the police HQ and from fascist groups.
Careful, here: I am not applauding the attack against Giolias. Shooting him down was not the solution. But we should be able to get our facts straight – and of course the beeb should be able, too: what on earth is his permanently dispatched correspondent in Athens doing!?

Confirmed: Golias was not a member of ESIEA, the Athens Union of Journalists.
As for the rumor that the police killed him to shut him up: you can never know in mafia-styled killings like this one, but personally I’d say this is highly unlikely. Golias was a high-ranked police collaborator.

Personally, i’m not sure at all that the Sect is involved to this assasination. The first thought was that it was a mafia execution, as he knew too many things about many people. The only way to be sure is to wait for a communique, or else that claims of the police usually do not mean anything.
Of course maybe i’m wrong, we’ll see.
