#269 | Emergency demonstrations in Athens and Thessaloniki against the IMF-imposed cuts

Corporate media across Greece are already reporting that government officials are about to announce “IMF-imposed” wage cuts across the country’s entire public sector (the Easter and Christmas bonuses are to be eliminated, VAT is set to increase from 21 to 23-25%). In response, emergency demonstrations have been called by grassroots trade unions and leftist organisations:

  • Athens, Syntagma square (close to the ministry of finance) 7.30pm
  • Thessaloniki, Neapoli 6.30 pm
  • Peristeri, Athens 7pm

UPDATE, 23.35 GMT+2. The demonstration in Athens saw one 20-year old detained by the police inside university grounds (Propylea) in a blatant violation of the academic asylum. Photos from tonight’s demo, more on IMC:
