On Monday night, the group conspiracy of cells of fire posted a communique on Athens Indymedia (greek original here) claiming Sunday night’s attack on the national bank and insurance agency on Sygrou Avenue in Athens. The explosion was very strong, marking an upgrading in the group’s capacities – as they themselves note in the communique. They send “comradely greetings” to anarchist bank robber and prisoner Yiannis Dimitrakis, to Chilean anarchists Freddy Fuentevilla and Marcelo Villaruel, to Gabriel Pompo da Silva (who went on hunger strike on December 20 in the prison of Aachen, Germany) as well as Ilias Nikolaou, Polykarops Georgiadis (another two anarchist prisoners in Greece) and finally, Charis Chatzimichelakis and Panayiotis Masouras, as well as the third person in pre-trial detention in connection to the conspiracy of cells of fire case, who they name by initials only.

from a comment on germany.indymedia:
On their announcement they state that this action was in solidarity with Freddy Fuentevilla and Marcelo Villaruel from Chile, Gabriel Pompo da Silva who is imprisoned in Aachen, Ilias Nikolaou, Polykarpos Georgiadis, Charis Chatzimichelakis, Panagiotis Masouras and M.G. and with all people who are under law repression as members of the Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire.
They approached the target with two persons getting in the basement to place the bomb and two others on the street taking care for any possible danger. The exploding mechanism was different this time, also the exploding material which will be the same during the next attacks. The evolution of these techniques came after cooperation with other teams of urban guerrilla. The time that was given to the police authorities to evacuate the area was decided in the 15 minutes because of the mass of police forces around the certain area.
The evacuation time will be given from now on in different chronological periods, related with the police forces around the certain targeted districts. They also state, that their aim is only material damages but not humans and call the police to be on time any time if necessary. Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire also call citizens to be careful with fake phone calls for bomb explosions, so no misunderstood from police’s side will be possible to take place. The announcement ends with the title of the german movie “Die fetten jahre sind vorbei”.

Last week we compiled a pdf/zine from the the interviews by the publishers of “We Are an Image of the Future: The Greek Revolt of December 2008,” which were released in syndication on such sites as anarchistnews (http://www.anarchistnews.org/?q=node/10256)
Hope people find it, and see it as a useful piece for English readers to get an idea of December 2008. Oh… and go buy the real book when it comes out!
this insurrectionist stuff is a disaster. it is what the state wants and needs. it divides opposition, ut divides activists from the mass ( with whom there is NO change) and it plays into their hands and it puts good people in jail. and of course it is likely that the state is behind it.
the state is oppressive, militaristic denies liberty, is hierarchical and closed. we must oppose it with openness, with horizontal organizing, be resolutely anti militaristic
.. these ‘actions’ merely mirror the state and are as such anti-revolutionary
The state is not behind everything!! There are real people that chose to act this way, and this is proved many times in the recent history (imprisonment of anarchists etc). It’s a possibility that the masses separate themselves from the activists, but actually this has not happened. The “masses” get even more activist, as the time passes. I do not disagree with you, about openness, horizontal organizing, and this is what people in greece do. These actions are not against the mass movement, even though i wouldn’t choose to act this way for many other reasons.
clandestine militant actions are often a result of repression or a strategy rooted in special circumstances and a decision.
greece looks like that a growing number of people have some sympathy, be it small(?) parts of the drafted army or even some orthodox priests.
eKathimerini reports that a group calling itself the Terrorist Guerrilla Group has also claimed the bombing. (see “Blast at insurance company claimed” at ekathimerini.com)
Is this a parastate diversion, or who are these “terrorists”? Does anyone have a clue?
a co-op as announced weeks before…
here it sounds different:
http://www.hri.org/news/greek/apeen/2009/09-12-29_1.apeen.html#02
I think it’s a phenomenally bad idea to voluntarily label oneself ‘terrorist’. It sits too well in the story State likes to tell of itself, you know the Hobbesian ‘state of nature’, ‘war of all against all’ and the state then playing the role of savior. Which is all a variation on the Christian theme of Original Sin. That ancient play was written by Authority, and if one assumes the role of ‘the bad guys’, one quite possibly just ends up reinforcing the State.
I think the conceptual struggle around ‘terrorism’ is worth fighting; not all political violence is terrorist, and especially not anarchist (anti)political violence when it chooses its targets thoughtfully and tries to avoid indiscriminate casualties. If anarchists call this violence ‘terrorist’, they just add to the confusion the State wants.
“Even if those who hold power, and therefore the manipulators of History and Culture try to change its meaning, the word ‘terrorism’ means ‘use of indiscriminate violence with the aim of conquering, consolidating and defending political power’. Anarchists, on the contrary, even when they have decided to use violence, have never used it in an indiscriminate way. Then it is absolutely ridiculous to think that anarchists want to conquer power, given that their aim is to destroy it! After all, the bombs in the squares and on the trains, the massacre of entire populations and the ‘exportation of democracy’ are certainly not anarchist practises.”

I understand greek, so i’ll try to explain a bit this issue, even though i agree with derbis that it’s not the best idea to call yourself like that…
The communique had a signature that is translated something like: “Guerrilla Group of Terrorists – Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire” (or Conspiracy of the nuclei of fire – same word in greek). A confusion with the translation may happen. The group does not use the greek word for “terrorists” (τρομοκράτες), which is actually the most used and common. They use the word “τερροριστών”, which is the latin equivalent and generally it is not used, even though it is easily understood by greek speakers.
Searching for the previous communiques of the group “Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire” i see that they used this word (always the latin equivalent) for first time last May, when they attacked two under construction police offices (in Athens and Thessaloniki) with relatively big bombs (it was the first time they used something more than propane gas canisters). They used actually the phrase “revolutionary terrorism”, explaining that “it is a factor of social deregulation and systemic instability without never sure what could happen after”. In this communique they explain their view about urban guerrilla. (not first time, but in my opinion the most extent)
After that they used the word again in a communique for the attack of 3rd of October 2009 against the main pre-election gathering of the rightwing (and at that time ruling) party of New Democracy, during the speak of the prime minister. In that communique which is relatively long and it’s the first after the arrest of three supposed members of the group, they refer to this word 4 times, in different parts of the text. In the part that they explain that the type of bomb they used is not something new or their invention (as suggested by the media) and is used for many years “since the 19th contury by French terrorists and nihilists (Anri, Ravasol, Vayan)” and by others that they refer to.
Also, what “culture shock names” says is true. They announced the cooperation of the conspiracy of Cells of Fire with the Guerrilla Group of Terrorists, in the communique for the attack against Mimis Andreoulakis, a former leftist and current member of the parliament. The abstract translated is: “From now on, the comrades of ‘Conspiracy of Cells of Fire’ and ‘Guerilla Group of Terrorists’ will work toghether promoting the social provocation, along with the continuation of collaboration of certain cells with the Nihilist Fraction”.
This was the last attack, using small bombs, and after that this attack with a mega-bomb took place…
I’m not trying to justify the use of this word by this group, i’m just trying to clarify a bit things for comrades that don’t understand greek. The last thing i would want to do is to condemn or cheer for these actions or texts. One thing is sure 100%: that normal people generally in greece are not terrorized by these attacks.
social war not guerilla war!
guerilla war = defeat.
