#89 | “In these strange times…” Music promoter in Athens exposed as undercover cop

May 1, 2002. Members of the Stalinist Communist Party (KKE) have just discovered an armed undercover cop to have infiltrated their Mayday demonstration in Athens. They demand to know his name (Christos Giannakoulis, pic 1) and hand him over, together with his gun (pic 2), to the head of the police present at the demonstration (source: Rizospastis, the newspaper of the CP).

Case closed? Hardly. Seven years on, in September 2009, the story resurfaces in the forum of Athens Indymedia. Before long, people realise that the undercover cop that was arrested in the mayday demonstration of 2002 is alive and doing very well, thank you very much: These days Mr. Giannakoulis is a music promoter, running a shop in the popular area of Monastiraki in Athens and organising heavy metal gigs, inviting bands whose tariff would be out of reach for most. Not if you have the kind sponsorship of the greek police though…

In the past few days, since the case has been unveiled, most bands that had agreed to play at gigs organised by “Xigas” have canceled. One of the bands, Mortal Threat, issued this short statement:

“Due to our beliefs and ideology, of course we will not appear at the scheduled live with Sodom. The swine flu seems to be hanging over our heads and for no band in the world will we demolish what we have been building as humans all these years”.

It seems that the news has circulated in Greece’s heavy metal scene. This short post will hopefully bring the news to bands planning on playing in the country under the invitation of Christos Giannakoulis or “Xigas”: Help boycott a police front operation!
