On Wednesday night (20.05) police raided a coffee house on Acharnon Street in Athens, mostly frequented by migrants. During a “routine check” (which often includes the intimidation and humiliation of the subjects of these checks), a policeman teared apart a copy of the koran, belonging to one of the migrants under search.

At least 15 demonstrators were detained on Friday night. On Thursday, when the news spread, an impromptu demonstration took place outside the police station of Patisia, in Athens.

Today (Friday, 22.5) a demonstration was called by migrant communities and groups in solidarity – heading from Omonoia Square to Syntagma Square (home of the parliament). The demonstration is happening right now (15:30 GMT) and athens indymedia reports hundreds of migrant demonstrations are attacking the police with stones and water bottles. The police are responding, as usual, with heavy tear gas.

Earlier, the police announced they arrested a Syrian citizen of Palestinian descent for allegedly throwing a molotov cocktail at the police station of Patisia.
