The accidental death of a refugee in Igoumenitsa and a passer-by in London

“News” are coming in from London: Iain Tomlinson didn’t die from a heart attack. The police didn’t try to save his life by dragging him away from hordes of angry anarchists. Iain Tomlinson died of internal haemorrhage moments after being beaten by the police.

Iain Tomlinson was assassinated by the police.

Only two days later (on April 3d), a few thousand kilometers to the South, a Kurdish refugee from Iraq was beaten by police at the port city of Igoumenitsa in NW Greece. 29-year old Arivan Abdullah Osman was part of a group mingling around the city’s port in the hope to get on one of the trucks boarding the ferries to Italy. Eye-witnesses told of how port police ordered them to leave the port, which they did, only to return moments later in the vain hope of hiding in one of the trucks. Police commandos in blue and military camouflage uniforms, as described by the same eye-witnesses, arrested Arivan Abdullah and beat him – repeatedly banging his head on the cement, causing him an internal haemorrhage. Now at the Papanikolaou hospital in Thessaloniki Arivan Abdullah has, according to doctors, no chance to recover. He will either die or go into vegetative state until his relatives allow for his disconnection from the support machinery.

Arivan Abdullah Osman was assassinated by the police.

The police assassinate Iains, Arivans and Alexis’ every day and will continue to do so. These assassinations are anything but accidents. They are an integral, central function in the machinery of oppression that is the state.

They will continue to happen. How much longer? For as long as we continue to allow them to do so.

Igoumeninja: Thanks for your comment – really good to see your initiative exists. Would be great if you could post any updates on Arivan’s health status here.

    Thanks again.

don like body count, but how many “police related deaths” in greece are there now since 28th of oct/nov 08?
    5 or 6?
plus the high number of refugees that die in the agaen sea (with or without “help” by greek marines)and at the mined border to turkey.
for turkey there is a tourism-boycot since 1980 and i think it’s time to start this direction regarding greece surrounded by a campaign.
at least that would make some sense also regarding to what happened after the big fire 2 years ago: the government sold out the burned areas to the tourism industry instead of helping their farmers.
atleast – and if one would have the money anyway – it makes no sense doing holidays in greece if one can’t sleep at the beach no more cuz everywhere are umbrellas and police and rent scooters
