#38, 15:38 Massive Athens demo ends; people retreat in the university; air gun found by demonstrators; Patras and Thessaloniki demos set to start

rain2_010

UPDATE, 5.01 The reports coming in from Patras talk of two big demonstrations that numbered around 2,000 in total – one from, and one toward the school where 18 years ago teacher Nikos Temponeras was assassinated by right-wing thugs.

In Thessaloniki demonstrators attacked the police station of Ano Poli; the cops responded by throwing tear gas. The demonstration, around 1,500-strong, retreated in the occupied Theatre School and the main university campus.

Athens, 9.1 – A demonstrator that had just received medical treatment after his injuring by the cops was once again attacked by them, hit with a baton stick from behind only moments after he had exited the clinic. Photo from UK IMC

16:28 At least 60 detentions so far. Police have surrounded the Law School and Propylea and make mass arrests. Mainstream media report there are around 8,000 police on the streets of Athens with clear orders to make mass arrests.

15:29 The first tear gas cannisters are being shot. The demonstrators are retreating in the university (Propylea).

Today’s demo in Athens was massive, with up to 10,000 taking the streets. The cops had tried to install an atmosphere of terror; they were to be seen literally everywhere. The anarchist block numbered around 2,000. Demonstrators found an air gun wrapped up in a newspaper (!) and handed it to the police – this could have been an attempt for yet another provocation.

An evening demonstration has also been called for 5pm. The demos in Thessaloniki and Patras start at 6; more reports to follow.

The updates sound worrisome, the mass media broke with an extra bulletin, for those who like to see some recent images, here’s their broadcast. Of course comments are in Greek.

What is it with this moderation (read censorship), I thought we was living in a free society?
I posted it on 9.24, it’s now already 10.20, according this clock and it’s still not up?
Must I imagine myself some operator turning shifts, in sifting through all our commentst in order to give clearance for what we say or what links we put out?
And huh who’s controlling the moderator? This is somekind of rude awakening.

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz is reporting that the U.S. has arranged for a charter ship “to carry 325 standard 20-foot containers of what is listed as ‘ammunition’ on two separate journeys from the Greek port of Astakos to the Israeli port of Ashdod in mid-to-late January.” The type and nature of the shipment is described as “pretty rare.”

“A senior military analyst in London who declined to be named said that, because of the timing, the shipments could be ‘irregular’ and linked to the Gaza offensive.”

This is the description of the shipment from DEBKAfile:

The US Navy’s Military Sealift Command is hiring a merchant ship to carry the arms on two separate journeys from the Greek port of Astakos to Israel in mid-to-late January, according to Reuters. A ‘hazardous material” designation on the manifest mentions explosive substances and detonators, but no other details. One broker said that the size of a shipment of this kind has not been seen for years. DEBKAfile’s military sources note that the Israel’s air, ground, tank and sea offensive against Hamas in Gaza entered its 15th day Saturday, Jan. 10.

It is significant that the shipment will take place just days prior to the Obama inauguration. As I have predicted, there is concern regarding emergency resupply to Israel once Obama takes over. This shipment also will raise the cackles of “peace” groups, like the columnist who compared Israel to Auschwitz prison guards.
    ——————————————————————————-
UPDATE: The Pentagon is denying that the shipment is related to the Gaza fighting, saying it is for a U.S. stockpile in Israel.” (h/t Let’s Get It Right). Even if this is true, one of the purposes of the prepositioning of equipment and ammunition in Israel is to make the material available to Israel in time of crisis. Maybe the timing is just a coincidence, but the unusual nature of the consignment raises questions.

Someone needs to spread the word to our Greek comrades and find if there is something that can be done.
