A note on solidarity

“Have you heard? There was a solidarity action in Moscow”. And Paris. And Berlin, Mexico City, London, Oaxaca, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, New York (when was a university there last occupied?) and Montreal. And -literally- hundreds of other cities. In the first few days of the revolt we were thinking of trying to put together all the solidarity actions somewhere – this was proven to be, quite simply, impossible: There are hundreds of actions around the globe, thousands of people that have taken to the streets. This is incredible and you can’t believe how important it is for us. Our struggle is common. On December 20th, on the international day of solidarity, let’s show them what we have started to feel here in Greece: That what we’ve seen so far is only the begining.

Update, 22:10 Someone already started putting together a map of solidarity actions around the world. Excellent stuff. Please report your solidarity action here: http://greeksolidaritymap.blogspot.com/

    Axiom: On Passive Resistance
In the 20th century the war for civil liberties in America was fought against a democratically elected government under constant pressure from public opinion and a free media. Passive resistance worked in the last war.

This government is not elected. This government controls public opinion. There is no free media. In this world, passive resistance is suicide.

    Solidarity demo in Dublin Ireland

Whilst this demos has been called in solidarity with the popular up rising in Greece, in the context of cops killing an 15 yeare old boy, by shooting him at piont blank range in the chest, it should be remembers that many families in Ireland have had to deal with deaths of their children is less than clear circumstances

It should also be obvious that many deaths wiill result form the service cutbacks no proposed by our government. These clearly are a capitalist attack on ordinary people, as global capitalist seek to prop up a global finacial system which has injustice and inequality as one of its core principles

We will not forget this, nor will we forget that the police forces of the state have, as a primary concern, the continuation of the status quo, at all cost. One need only look to Rossport, or the disgusting treatment at the hands of the Guards, to families looking clear and honest answers, and justice, for the death of their loved ones, that in many circumstances, at the very least deserve full and independant public inquiries

This is a list of deaths in Guards custody since 1997 to march 2006
Derek Lehane, aged 19, was taken by ambulance to hospital from Midleton Garda station, Cork in January 1997.

He was pronounced dead in hospital the same day. An inquest gave a verdict of accidental death arising from the
    ingestion of a controlled drug.

In December 1997, Norman McGrath, aged 48, from Ballyfermot collapsed in Pearse St Garda station and was
pronounced dead at hospital. A post mortem found he had had a heart attack.

In January 1998, David O’Connor, aged 34, died at Wexford Garda Station.

Peter Williams, aged 33, from Thurles, collapsed in Kilmainham Garda Station in Dublin on 7 September 1998 and
died in hospital. The inquest held that his was death by misadventure arising from the ingestion of prescribed drugs.

On 18 September 1998, Francis Brooks, aged 23, of Rathfarnham, was found dead in Tallaght Garda Station.

On 26 May 1999, Martin Hickey was found dead from strangulation at Trim Station.

On 22 August 1999, a 52 year old man died in Rathmines Garda Station. The Inquest recorded a verdict of death
by misadventure, due to vomit inhalation as a result of acute alcohol intake.

On May 10 2000, Derek Cooper from Southill, Limerick was found hanging in a cell in Roxboro Garda station. he
had been arrested inder the public order act.

In October 2000, Walter Kells, aged 26, was found collapsed in Drogheda Garda station and later pronounced dead. He had been arrested for an alleged breach of
    the peace.
On 4 June 2001, an unnamed man was found dead in Store Street Garda station.

On 13 September 2001, Thomas Mongan, from Westside, Galway, died in hospital shortly after having been
    arrested.

On 3 May 2001, Patrick Hayes hung himself in a cell at Dungarvan Garda station, Waterford. He had been
arrested under Section 17 of the Domestic Violence Act 1996 following an alleged incident involving his former partner.

In December 2002, 19-year-old Paul Magee died in hospital after being found unconscious in Kilmainham Garda
Station. A postmortem concluded his death was consistent with cocaine-related collapse

On 12 September 2002, Brian Rossiter was found unconscious in Clonmel Garda station, and died later in
    hospital.

On 17 June 2003, an unnamed man died in custody in Tallaght Garda station.

On 21 December 2003, John Delaney died in Kilkenny Garda station.

On 3 January 2004, William Haugh, aged 48, from Donaghmede, Dublin died in Clontarf Garda station.

On 13 January 2004, Peter Skelly, aged 25, died in Youghal Garda station.

Also in January 2004, Thomas Campion, aged 23, died in Store Street Garda station.

On 2 June 2005, Terence Wheelock was arrested and brought to Store Street Garda station, and later died in
    hospital.

Really sorry for the bad translation, a short response to the reference on some past insurrections

Every revolt is a fight, yet a fight in which you decided to participate. The instant of the revolt determines the lightning realization and objectification of the self as part of a collectivity. The fight between good and evil, survival and death, victory and failure, in which everyday everyone is committed, identifies itself with the battle of the whole collectivity: everybody has the same weapons, everybody faces the same obstacles, the same enemy. Everybody experiments the epiphany of the same symbols: the individual space of each, dominated by its own personal symbols, the refuge from historical time that each one finds again in his own symbology and his own individual mythology, they amplify, becoming the commune symbolic space of a whole collectivity, the refuge from the historical time in which a whole collectivity finds a way out.
Each revolt is clearly defined by precise boundaries in historical time and space. Before and after stretches a no man’s land and the length of each one’s life in which unbroken individual fights take place. The concept of permanent revolution reveals –instead of the interrupted length of revolt in the historical time- the will to can suspend in every moment the historical time to find refuge in the symbolic time and space of the revolt.

You can love a city, you can recognize its houses and streets in your own most distant and dearest memories; yet only in the moment of the revolt the city is really felt as your own city: own, because of the “I” and at the same time the “others”; own because field of a battle that you’ve decided and that collevtivity decided; own, because clearly defined space in which the historical time is suspended and in which each act is of use on its own terms, in its absolutely immediate consequences. You make a city proper fleeing or advancing in the alternation of the attacks, much more then when you played on its streets as a kid or walking later with your girlfriend. In the moment of the revolt you are not anymore alone in the city.

    Solidarity from Brooklyn.

The primary issue with socialist policy in america is the fact that america is a nation of bourgeoisie. that is, america is no more exceptional compared to any other western culture other than the fact that the working class has been brought to a point where we believe ourselves to be “middle class” no matter our actual standing thanks to the banks lending money so freely for the past few decades. thanks to our political structure, we view the ownership of capital as the only proper identification of class, which has allowed the banks to “elevate” or “equalize” our classes rhetorically over the past three decades. the financial industry has separated the working class from the reality of struggle simply by making money easily available and encouraging a culture of consumption. as anarchists, as socialists, as communists, we see society as it is, and we see our existence in properly realistic terms rather than buy into the redefinition of class. working class americans don’t see it that way, since they see themselves as middle class they feel it more important to protect the way of life that they now have (no matter their difficulties) and view any attempt to define us on class terms as a threat to such a way of life. solidarity doesn’t exist in a society which has been so fundamentally influenced by objectivist, capitalist-libertarian viewpoints for so long.

this is no excuse for our failure to act, simply a reason why we face such difficulty. we will overcome the mass media, by means of the grassroots, and more pointedly by the means of the net.

Greece has pointed the way forward, and may whatever god you take stock in damn us all if we do not follow.

The Greeks and those acting in solidarity with the Greeks need a better frame. We need something transgressive. We need something that moves beyond the notiion of “rioters” and “Greeks” so that this encuentro with the world can spread farther. Not enough people want to be “rioters” or in solidarity with rioters.
