#11, 18:52, THESSALONIKI: Cops provoke 2,000-strong demo; students besieged in the Northern town of Komotini

Eyewitness in Thessaloniki: 2,000-strong demonstration in Thessaloniki is constantly being provoked by the police. In the Northern town of Komotini, in Thrace, 300 local students and students from the adjacent city of Xanthi are besieged in the university – around the university grounds, 200 riot cops, undercovers and Golden Dawn fascists are threatening to enter.

More updates will follow.

yes that’s it. Situation in Thessaloniki wasn’t as bad as the poster described it to be at all; however, information coming in from Komotini is both alarming and scarce. Will do our best to get more info from there.

Disclaimer : I am not at the events, just copy-pasting from the websites.

For those from abroad, this city has a grey past as it is in the border with Turkey and has a relatively large muslim population who has been many times accused by the far right, church and media for having close ties with Turkey.

As a result of this, there are strong numbers of neonazis (Golden Dawn – i know it sounds ridicilous in English) who are eager to strangle every movement.

Furthermore, the head of the Thrace district (perifereia in Greek) where trying to terrorise shopkeepers and people in the street by spreading lies about anarchists coming to burn the city.

Something similar happened yesterday in Patras where again students where besieged by neonazis and “enraged citizens”.

    Very rough translation:
The situation is defused after negotiations with the mayor, perfaector and a committee from SYRIZA.

    Personal comment:

I think it is a bit sad and definitely shows the deep crisis in the Greek political system: “Students being besieged by neonazis with the support of the police, and leftists and city officials negotiating (begging) for their release”.

Its these conditions that fuel (perhaps literally) those kids to be in the streets for 6 consecutive days.

This is an extract of the Greek satire show called “Ellinofreneia”. Watch carefully in 1:45 and you’ll see a member of the riot police (not even an undercover cop this time) hitting a vehicle.

Received this from a comrade in Athens. He’s been thrilled all week, but seems like things are now really going into a climax. He sending cries for support abroad and counters of media-lies almost hourly, and it seems like it’s about 50/50 that either the cops and all their supporters win, or they hold their stand. Things seems to be developping really into a city war now, luckily without much blood.

Good luck and solidarity from antwerp, belgium. I’m sorry we can’t do more for the greek people. I’m trying to get some people together here to call and pressure one of the big local newspapers to run this story as it is and as unbiased as possible.
Give your friend my regards, Pieter. We’ll try getting the -truth- in the media here.

Im sorry for posting again but I cant edit the previous comment.

“Photographs depicting a policeman waving a Glock pistol circulated the media. Later the photographer Costas Tsironis was fired from the newspaper he worked for, on the basis that he was responsible for leaking the pictures and thus breaking his contract.
Ultimately, the photographs were published on Tuesday in the media. However, the photographer claims that it is attempting to political censorship and says he is not responsible for the escape, as many workers in the newspaper had access to the photos. He added that if they had not leaked, “wouldn´t ever publish.”

Do any of the greek groups or people you know who this photographer is? If you can contact him and get his story out more publicly it could help your cause.
