#8, 16:46: Updates from Athens and Patras

ATHENS: High School students joined the trade union march. They pelted riot police with stones and paint. In the suburb of Kaisariani the school students attacked the local police station.

Meanwhile, a group of anarchists attacked the central courts while inside Alexandros’ murderer was appearing before the prosecutor.  The court’s control room and a media van were set on fire.

PATRAS:  General assembly now at the university about yesterday’s events.

YOU NEED TO GET ANARCHISTS TO SEIZE THE MEDIA, RIGHT NOW! YOU MUST BROADCAST YOUR SIDE OF THINGS, DENOUNCE THE LIES IN THE CORPORATE MEDIA REPORTS, AND RALLY PEOPLE TO SUPPORT THE SIDE OF FREEDOM AND EQUALITY AGAINST THE FASCISTS AND POLICE WHO WORK TOGETHER!

Seize the media to spread the revolt!
Seize space to draw clear lines and create autonomous zones where police can’t go and neighborhood assemblies can begin to meet, and land, buildings, and goods can be re-distributed while the struggle continues. this is the only way!

first, the writing and reporting on this blog is excellent. thank you.

from the USA, i have been closely following the events in greece and have felt inspired, hoping that the riots become something more than riots and move beyond greece’s borders. i begin to wonder what could be the next step: for days, rebels have rioted in the centers of greece’s major cities and have smashed and smashed. while we could call this ‘propaganda by the deed’, it seems that more needs to be done to articulate the rage and to perhaps identify some goals (destruction may be a short-term goal, but it certainly is not viable as a strategy in the long-term). i should note that it is completely possible that this may be happening in greek and is not being translated into English; so far, I have read two communiques coming out of universities, the words of one has even landed on an English language poster (http://nyc.indymedia.org/en/2008/12/102016.html) – we need more of this! in this sense, this blog is performing an important service, especially by making news available in several languages (English, German, French)

the international media has drawn its own conclusions about the causes underlying the fires: they speak of economic crisis and disparity between the rich and poor in Greece; hopefully, the rebels themselves will begin to articulate their message.

    in solidarity!

This site is great. I’m compiling mainstream and anarchist reports, video, photos, and calls to action on my site, The Center For Strategic Anarchy (strategicanarchy.blogspot.com), as well as directing readers here. If the folks running this site wanted to add a link to my site, that’d be very cool, and might be helpful to readers since Infoshop is loading very slowly right now.

A sympathy demonstration has just been held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The demonstration tried to reach the Greek embassy, but went into confrontations with the police, that tried to block them. 32 arrested for vandalism in the inner city…

thanks for the support and your interest.
Media all over the world are covering the issue… not because they think it’s interesting or anything but because they are afraid of what could be coming their way. and it is coming their way.
Greek media keeps spreading lies about the causes of the uprise. they insist calling the students and other protesters “hood-wearing hooligans”…
I work in Palio Phaliro. Around ten cops of the Zita force (bike riding motherfuckers) started shooting right outside my building.

on the stabbings: it is extremely difficult to confirm just exactly how many have taken place. There were at least two in Athens on Tuesday night though and possibly one in Patras on Tuesday too.

Festus Okey (25) killed by police, because he was a negro…

Cagdas Gemik (only 18), polise order “stop!” and he didn’t stop. Polise killed him.(30.11.2008) 3 bullets are taken out from his head…
    Because, he was an Alevi.

Engin Ceber(29) died during TORTURE(28.10.2008-8.11.2008)… His friend (only 17) become paralyzed, police shoot. He and his friends protest this brutality and they arrested…

Again and again we did not anything,
    because…

Excuse me for my bad language.

It’s a technical glitch and happens often – the server overload is simply tremendous, with Athens indymedia receiving around 20 times its daily average. It should be back soon…
